Townsend Middle School – Vaping Information Assembly

Townsend Middle School – West Virginia, USA

On May 5, 2025, I traveled to West Virginia to deliver a vaping information assembly at Townsend Middle School. The entire student body gathered in the auditorium, and the level of attention was impressive. Middle school students face increasing exposure to vaping devices, flavored products, and social pressure. Because of this, they benefit from clear and science-based prevention education.

During the session, we explored how nicotine affects the developing brain. Students learned how e-cigarettes change dopamine patterns, influence mood, and increase cravings. We discussed how quickly a “once in a while” habit can become a daily routine. One student commented afterward, “I didn’t know vapes could mess with your brain that fast.” Insights like this show how important it is to give teens straightforward information without judgment.

A vaping information assembly at Townsend Middle School focused on nicotine awareness and the impact of e-cigarettes on the developing brain.

We also reviewed how vaping companies design their products to appeal to youth. Their strategies often include bright colors, fun flavors, and packaging that resembles candy or technology. Because of these tactics, many students underestimate the risks. Several parents later shared that they appreciated the workshop, as it helped them understand why conversations at home can sometimes feel difficult. Prevention works best when schools and families communicate together.

To support the discussion, I provided the students with a national resource from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their tobacco prevention platform includes teen-focused facts and up-to-date findings on nicotine products:

A fun fact about the region: Townsend Middle School sits near the Appalachian foothills, an area known for its strong community spirit and outdoor programs for youth.
