On April 28, 2025, I traveled to Nevada to present a marijuana information workshop at the Brighton Community Center. Before the event began, I had a chance to enjoy the holiday displays in the area. The bright lights and decorated trees created a welcoming atmosphere and offered a short moment to reflect before meeting with students and families.

During the workshop, we focused on how marijuana affects the developing brain. Many students believe marijuana is harmless because it is legal for adults in several states. Because of this, we talked about THC concentration, vaping devices, and how today’s products differ from what existed in the past. Students learned how marijuana impacts memory, motivation, and decision-making. One student said, “I didn’t know the THC levels were that high now.” Comments like this show how important clear, science-based information is for teens.
We also discussed how marijuana use can influence school performance, mood, and long-term goals. Several parents attended the session. They asked thoughtful questions about communication, monitoring, and how to respond when their children hear conflicting messages from peers or social media. Sessions that include both youth and families help reinforce prevention conversations at home.
To deepen the learning, I shared research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Their guidance explains how THC affects teen development and offers accessible prevention tools:

Students remained engaged throughout the workshop. Many asked about edibles, marijuana concentrates, and how to handle pressure from friends. Their curiosity showed a strong desire to understand the facts so they can make healthier choices.
A fun fact about the area: Brighton Community Center hosts one of Nevada’s largest winter youth festivals each year, bringing families together for music, games, and community programs.
