Sierra Vista Leadership Academy – Youth Drug Prevention Workshop

January 21, 2026 Sierra Vista Leadership Academy

On January 20, 2025, I had the opportunity to present a youth drug prevention workshop at Sierra Vista Leadership Academy, a school recognized for its strong commitment to leadership development, discipline, and community engagement. The room was filled with highly focused cadets and students, many in uniform, reflecting the pride and structure that define the academy’s culture.

During this session, we explored one of the foundational concepts in youth drug prevention: the adolescent brain processes social pressure differently, often prioritizing group acceptance over long-term safety. This is consistent with national findings on teen risk-taking and peer influence, such as those highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

By understanding how the brain’s reward and emotional systems activate during social situations, students learned why split-second decisions—especially involving vaping, alcohol, or pills—can feel easier to justify in a group. Our conversation centered on recognizing these moments and using a brief pause to regain clarity before making a choice that affects their health and future.

The cadets at Sierra Vista Leadership Academy demonstrated exceptional engagement, asking detailed questions about addiction science, brain development, and the dangers associated with fentanyl-contaminated substances. Their willingness to participate reinforced how effective prevention education becomes when students feel respected, informed, and included in the discussion.

A fun fact about Sierra Vista Leadership Academy: the school is known for hosting an annual “Community Skills Expo,” where cadets showcase leadership, emergency-response skills, and teamwork demonstrations for families across the region.
