Rio Vista Continuation School – Nicotine Awareness Session

Rio Vista Continuation School – New Mexico, USA

On March 17, 2025, I traveled to New Mexico to present a youth drug prevention session at Rio Vista Continuation School. The students gathered in the school library for an interactive discussion on nicotine, vaping, and the importance of healthy decision-making. Continuation school students often balance academics with personal responsibilities, so this workshop emphasized practical tools they can use in daily life.

We began by exploring how nicotine companies design products that appeal to teens. Many students see flavored vapes, colorful packaging, or discreet devices at school or online. These features make harmful products appear harmless. Because of this, we reviewed how nicotine affects the adolescent brain and why teens experience stronger cravings than adults. Students learned that even short-term use can lead to long-term dependence.

To build on these ideas, I shared national research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their youth substance-use data helps communities understand current trends and supports families working to prevent addiction:

The Rio Vista students asked thoughtful questions about peer pressure, stress, and how to support a friend who may be tempted to vape or experiment with substances. Several students mentioned how often they encounter nicotine ads on social media, which made the conversation more relevant. Their honesty created a strong learning environment.

A fun fact about the area: Rio Vista sits near a historic stretch of Route 66, where many local murals celebrate community resilience and cultural pride.
