Youth Drug Prevention & Decision Pathways Assembly

Riverview High School – Tennessee, USA

On March 31, 2025, I traveled to Tennessee to lead a youth drug prevention assembly at Riverview High School. The entire student body gathered in the auditorium for a session designed to help teens understand how everyday choices influence their health and future. A presenter opened the discussion by talking about how quickly small decisions can escalate when pressure, stress, or curiosity is involved.

During the presentation, students explored how the adolescent brain manages risk. Teens often react quickly in social situations, especially when friends are present. Because of this, they may not notice the long-term effects associated with vaping, alcohol, or pills. We discussed how a brief pause can help reset their thinking. This simple step gives students time to consider how a momentary choice may lead to a larger pattern.

We also examined how substance-use marketing targets young people. Many products are designed with appealing flavors or modern packaging. These strategies can make harmful items appear less dangerous. To support this conversation, I shared national research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their youth substance-use data gives families and educators helpful insight into current trends:

The students at Riverview High School participated actively. They asked questions about peer pressure, family expectations, and how to support a friend who may be struggling. Their engagement reflected a strong school culture that values honesty, education, and resilience.

A fun fact about the area: Riverview’s campus sits near a historic overlook along the Tennessee River, a site known for community events and outdoor student activities.
