Seattle Youth Wellness Coalition – Early Warning Signs Workshop

Seattle Youth Wellness Coalition – Seattle, Washington

On March 24, 2025, I traveled to Seattle, Washington, to participate in a youth drug prevention workshop hosted by the Seattle Youth Wellness Coalition. The event brought together students from several local programs. The goal was to help teens recognize early warning signs of substance use and understand how small decisions can create long-term patterns. A presenter opened the session by discussing how quickly substance-related choices can escalate, especially during stressful or emotional moments.

During the workshop, students learned how nicotine, alcohol, and pills affect the developing brain. We also explored how teens often underestimate risk when a choice seems small. Because of this, early recognition becomes essential. The presenter explained how noticing changes in behavior, sleep, or friendships can help students support themselves and one another. This conversation encouraged teens to look for patterns instead of isolated moments.

To strengthen the lesson, we shared national research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their data highlights important trends in teen substance use and provides guidance for schools, families, and community organizations:

The students remained engaged throughout the session. Many asked questions about stress, social pressure, and how to talk with a trusted adult when they feel overwhelmed. Their interest showed the importance of honest, science-based discussions. Community programs like this coalition help normalize these conversations so that students feel supported rather than judged.

A fun fact about Seattle: the city is home to one of the largest public library systems in the country, known for hosting youth-led discussions and wellness events.
