On February 26, 2026, I traveled to Orlando, Florida, to present a vaping prevention workshop at the Orlando Youth Summit. The room was filled with students from programs across the region. The event brought together teens who were eager, curious, and ready to learn about the realities behind nicotine products. With flavored vapes, bright packaging, and targeted marketing, students face pressures that previous generations never experienced.

During the workshop, we explored how vaping affects the adolescent brain. Students learned how nicotine influences memory, mood, and motivation. Many were surprised to hear how quickly dependence can develop. One participant said, “I thought vaping was safer because it doesn’t smell like cigarettes.” Comments like this show how necessary clear and science-based education is for prevention.

We also discussed the role of peer influence and stress. When teens feel pressure to fit in, risky choices can seem harmless. Because of this, we practiced simple decision-making strategies students can use when they feel uncertain. Several adults attending the event asked how to better communicate with teens about vaping. They appreciated learning conversational approaches that focus on support rather than punishment.

To reinforce the content, I shared a national resource from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their vaping and e-cigarette education page offers updated information for students, families, and schools:

A fun fact about the location: The Orlando Youth Summit is known for hosting events that mix education with creativity, helping students connect with learning in a dynamic and memorable setting.
