On March 3, 2026, I traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, to present a marijuana prevention workshop at the Rapid City Youth Leadership Conference. The room was filled with motivated young leaders from across the region. They participated in activities, discussions, and prevention sessions designed to build confidence and informed decision-making.

During the workshop, we focused on how modern marijuana products differ dramatically from those of previous generations. Students learned how THC affects attention, motivation, and brain development. Because today’s concentrates and vape cartridges contain significantly higher THC levels, young people often underestimate their impact. After the session, one student shared, “I didn’t realize how strong the edibles and oils are now.” Comments like this highlight the need for accurate, science-based information.
We also addressed the role of social media in shaping perceptions of marijuana. Many teens encounter mixed messages online, making it difficult to distinguish facts from trends. Because of this, we explored strategies for evaluating information and asking questions when something doesn’t feel right. Several adult advisors noted that these tools help strengthen conversations at home and in youth programs.
To reinforce the lesson, I shared a national resource from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their cannabis and youth information page provides guidance for families, educators, and young people:

Students at the conference demonstrated strong leadership skills and a desire to support peers who may struggle with decision-making. Their commitment to building a healthier school culture was evident throughout the event.
A fun fact about Rapid City: It is known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills” and home to several large youth leadership gatherings each year.
