Sioux Valley Auditorium – Marijuana Prevention Assembly

February 12, 2026 Sioux Valley Auditorium – South Dakota, USA

On February 12, 2025, I traveled to Sioux Valley, South Dakota, to lead a marijuana prevention assembly for middle and high school students. The auditorium filled with students eager to learn, and the presenter delivered high-energy, age-appropriate information about the risks associated with modern THC products. Marijuana has changed significantly over the last two decades, and today’s concentrations require a new level of understanding.

During the assembly, students learned how THC affects memory, motivation, focus, and emotional regulation. Many were surprised to discover that marijuana concentrates used in vape pens or edibles contain far higher THC levels than the plant material their parents may remember. One student said afterward, “I had no idea the percentages were that high now.” Conversations like these demonstrate the value of honest, science-based education.

We also discussed how marijuana use impacts academic performance, sports, and teen mental health. Because stress and peer influence play large roles in decision-making, the presenter explained how small habits can quickly develop into patterns. Students appreciated the humor and relatable examples woven throughout the session, which helped them understand a complex topic without feeling judged.

Several parents attended the event through the school’s family partnership program. They asked important questions about edibles, early exposure, and how to communicate with teens who believe marijuana is “natural” or harmless. Prevention works best when families and schools work together to build consistent messages.

To strengthen the learning experience, students received a national resource from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Their marijuana education page offers practical guidance for youth and families:

A fun fact about the area: Sioux Valley is known for its historic performance hall, where community events, concerts, and youth programs take place throughout the year.
