Grand Forks Community Hall – Fentanyl Awareness Session

May 12, 2026 Grand Forks Community Hall – North Dakota, USA

On May 12, 2025, I traveled to Grand Forks, North Dakota, to deliver a fentanyl awareness workshop at the Grand Forks Community Hall. Although many of my presentations are for students, this session focused on adults, caregivers, and community leaders. The rise in counterfeit pills has created urgent challenges for families. Because of this, we emphasized practical strategies for recognizing risk and supporting youth.

During the session, we discussed the dangers associated with fentanyl-laced pills. Many counterfeit tablets look identical to legitimate prescriptions, making them extremely dangerous. I explained how even one pill can be fatal. Several participants shared stories of teens who believed they were taking something mild for stress or sleep. One attendee said, “I wish I understood how common these fake pills really are.” Comments like this show how prevention begins with awareness.

We reviewed signs of opioid use, communication strategies for families, and ways to talk with teens without increasing fear or shame. Parents often struggle with how to begin these conversations. Because of this, we practiced simple, supportive approaches designed to help families build trust. Community members also asked about school presentations and how early prevention education can reduce future opioid risk.

To support the workshop, I shared a national resource from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Their “One Pill Can Kill” campaign provides important information on counterfeit pills and fentanyl:

The group remained highly engaged. Many stayed after the session to ask questions about school outreach, early warning signs, and how to help young people navigate stress in safer ways.

A fun fact about the region: Grand Forks is known for its strong volunteer culture, with community groups partnering regularly to support youth programs and prevention efforts.
