Little Rock Community Youth Forum – Drug Prevention & Healthy Decision-Making Workshop

Little Rock, Arkansas – Community Youth Forum

On February 10, 2025, I traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas to present at the Little Rock Community Youth Forum, a citywide event dedicated to strengthening prevention, wellness, and resilience among young people. The forum brought together students, families, and local youth programs for a day of evidence-based learning and open dialogue. Arriving at the airport, I was reminded of how valuable it is to bring prevention education directly into communities of all sizes across the country.

Ray Lozano arrives in Little Rock, Arkansas to speak at a community youth forum focused on substance prevention and positive decision-making.

The focus of this session was healthy decision-making and substance-use prevention in real-world contexts, emphasizing how rapidly a young person’s brain responds to social cues, immediate rewards, and group expectations. We discussed why adolescents may underestimate the risks of vaping, alcohol, or pills—especially when surrounded by friends—and how understanding brain chemistry can empower them to pause before making a choice with long-term consequences.

This discussion aligns with national findings on teen risk perception, including research highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Participants asked thoughtful questions about communication, peer pressure, and how to support friends who might be struggling. The energy in the room reflected a strong community commitment to prevention and a shared belief that young people deserve honest, science-based tools rather than fear-based messaging.

A fun fact about Little Rock: the city hosts one of the largest youth volunteer corps programs in the South, supporting thousands of service hours annually across parks, schools, and community initiatives.
